Freshman shortstop Carter Franklin (Wooster/Canton Central Catholic) knocked in a run that brought the Ohio Wesleyan baseball team within 3-1, but Marietta held off the Bishop comeback to take a 4-1 win in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday, March 5 at Littick Field.
In the nightcap, senior Devin Van Winkle (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) singled home a run to put the Bishops on the scoreboard, but the Pioneers pulled away to complete the sweep with a 19-2 win.
Marietta took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the opener. Greg Peffley led off the inning by reaching base on a fielding error by Franklin and Connor Golden followed with a single through the left side. The runners moved to second and third on a sacrifice by Jonathan Pingree before Tanner Wood sent a triple into the leftfield corner to score both runs. Wood would come in to score on a grounder by Seamus Kenneally.
The Bishops closed to within 3-1 in the fifth. Junior outfielder Mitchell Johnson (Columbus/Hamilton Township) led off with a double, and one out later, sophomore Dalton Henderson (Bethel/New Richmond) singled Johnson to third. Franklin followed with a grounder to Pioneer first baseman Mike Hale, scoring Johnson and sending Henderson to second, but Marietta starter Tyler Nieberding got out of the inning without any further damage.
Pingree led off the sixth inning with a home run to left to close out the day’s scoring.
Johnson had 2 hits for Ohio Wesleyan. Junior righthander Kevin Zullo (Hudson) was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops.
Nieberding pitched the first 7.0 innings, scattering 5 hits, to record the win, and David Stover allowed 1 hit over the final 2.0 innings to collect a save.
The Pioneers jumped to a first-inning lead in the nightcap, lining 6 consecutive hits, highlighted by Peffley’s 2-run single.
Ohio Wesleyan got one run back in the bottom of the frame. Junior Colin Stolly (Lima/Central Catholic) sent a liner to left that glanced off the glove of Marietta leftfielder Pingree for a 3-base error. Van Winkle followed with a single to score Stolly.
Peffley had a 2-run double during Marietta’s 4-run fourth and added a run-scoring single during the Pioneers’ 7-run fifth, which was capped by a grand slam off the bat of Wood.
Freshman catcher Tim Robinson (Washington Court House/Washington) plated a run in the eighth to wrap up the Ohio Wesleyan scoring.
Freshman righthander Seth Pritchett (Centerville) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
