The season came to an end for the Madison County high school golfers who were trying to earn spots in the upcoming state championship tournament.

The Jonathan Alder boys team took on the best competition around at the Division II Central District championship held Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Denison Golf Club in Granville.

The Pioneers gave their best effort on the challenging course but their combined score of 335 was good enough for just fourth place, well behind the one and only state qualifying spot earned by Columbus Academy (302).

Bexley was second (306) and was followed by Bishop Hartley (322), Alder, DeSales (356) and Heath (358).

Alder was led by senior Giuseppe Petrella who finished with a round of 81. The other rounds which factored in the team score were an 83 from sophomore Hayden Mitchell (83), an 84 from sophomore Mychal McKelvey and an 87 from sophomore Tyler Hilbert. Senior Zach Otto finished his career with an 88.

The lone individual state qualifying spot was earned by Hartley’s Trent Tipton who shot a 71.

Division III

A pair of Shekinah Christian golfers competed as individuals at the D-III district tourney also held at Denison Golf Course Wednesday.

Junior Pete Shugert fired a solid round of 80 which placed him tied for eighth place, nine strokes behind the lone state qualifier East Knox’s Drew Salyers, who shot a blistering round of 69.

Flames’ senior John Michael Hershberger finished with a round of 97, which placed him 28th overall.
