There wasn’t a whole lot of winning going on this fall on the gridiron in Madison County,

Only one school had a winning record, Jonathan Alder (9-2) which qualified for the playoffs, but was upended by eventual Division IV state champion Bishop Hartley in its postseason opener.

West Jefferson finished the season 4-6, London was 3-7 and Madison-Plains closed out the year at 2-8.

But while wins were hard to come by, a number of county athletes had standout seasons and earned All-Central District recognition.

Division IV

A pair of players at both Alder and London earned their way onto the All-District first team.

The Pioneers had another stellar year from senior tight end Trey Pugh (6-5, 235). He caught 24 passes for 374 yards, rushed for 423 yards and scored a total of 14 touchdowns. The Northwestern University-bound standout had his season cut short with a shoulder injury.

Teammate Bryan Blacka (5-11, 165), a junior defensive back, also earned first team honors on the defensive side of the ball. He had five interceptions and 68 tackles.

London junior offensive lineman Jacob Jones (6-3, 283) was selected to the all-district first team offense, while Miller Kronk (6-2, 195) was the first team kicker.

A quartet of Pioneers made their way onto the all-district second team, including junior offensive lineman Casey Yutzy (5-10, 240), junior running back Jamie Dye (5-9, 175), senior linebacker Daniel Gowans (5-11, 200) and junior defensive back Dalton Potts (5-9, 170).

Special mention honorees included Drake Bater (Alder), Preston Eisnaugle (Alder) and London’s Caleb Whitacre. Honorable mention selections went to Jim Dulin (London), Andrew Koenig (Alder) and Hunter Maynard (Alder).

Division V

The only D-V team in the county is Madison-Plains. The Golden Eagles didn’t have any first team all-district players, but a collection of players were on the second team offense and defense.

Junior offensive lineman Ian Richards (6-2, 195) and senior running back Cameron Near (5-10, 190) were on the offensive side, while Theran Hatfield (6-0, 195), a senior defensive lineman and junior linebacker Griffin Jones (5-9, 175) were on defense.

Seniors Ross Buscemi and Chris Coil were Special/Honorable mention selections.

Division VI

West Jeff’s towering big man Gunnar Doran (6-3, 300) was a first team all-district offensive lineman, while junior defensive end Cole Howard (5-11, 190) made the second team. Special mention honors at D-VI went to Lance Lambert.
