Deadline nearing for November hopefuls

The clock is ticking for those interested in running for office in this November’s general election, as the deadline to pick up nonpartisan petitions is Aug. 5.

Up for grabs are 10 school board seats in the county’s four public districts, along with trustee seats in the county’s 12 townships. All terms are set to expire on Dec. 31, 2015.

A total of 18 individuals have picked up petitions for township trustee.

Those interested in running must turn in petitions to the Madison County Board of Elections by 4 p.m., Aug. 5. There is a $30 filing fee.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old, a resident of the territory comprising the district and a registered voter.

Potential candidates will receive a packet which includes various forms to fill out, a sample of how the forms should appear upon completion and candidate requirement guides.

After an individual submits a filing petition — and if it is properly completed — the board of elections will certify the petition. At that point, the individual becomes a candidate for the office.
