London, Alder to meet at Mapfre Stadium

The Jonathan Alder and London High School girls teams will get a rare chance to play on a big stage Saturday, Sept. 9, when they meet each other on the pitch at Mapfre Stadium, the home of Columbus Crew SC.

The Pioneers had a chance to play there a year ago, but was unable to make everything work out with their schedule. This time around they will get a chance to do so against a neighboring rival.

“We got offered to play there last year but could not make it work out with dates, times, etc.,” Alder coach Matt Evans said. “The girls are excited to play there. To play there under the lights and to play against London.”

Alder (4-0-1) which hadn’t yet to allow an opponent to score a goal this season until a 2-2 tie at Urbana Wednesday is off to a fast start. But the Pioneers don’t have a lot of veteran, experienced players so getting a chance to play in the best soccer stadium in the state and the place where the OHSAA state championships are held could act as a motivator for years to come.

“We are a very young team this season, so something like this is good to set the foundation of future years and give the girls a good memory,” Evans said.

In the tie with Urbana, Kenzie Bushong and Hannah Headlee each scored goals.

The Lady Red Raiders (0-4) are off to a slower start than they’d like, failing to pick up a victory in any of their first four contests. The most recent setback was a 7-0 defeat against visiting Bexley Wednesday evening.

But getting a chance to play on the state’s biggest soccer stage should bring out the best in the Raiders Saturday.
