One of the biggest strengths of the Shekinah Christian boys basketball team over the last few years has been it’s ability to shoot the basketball.
The Flames have become known for their ability to fill it up from long range and the squad passed those skills along last week during the team’s annual summer basketball camp.
“The Flames summer basketball camp at Shekinah Christian School concluded last week with tremendous improvement shown from campers of all ages,” coach Keith Lambert said.
Campers were divided into two groups the “NCAA” (fourth through sixth grade) and “NBA” (seventh through ninth grade) and worked on a variety of basketball skills during the week, including ball handling and defense. But the ability to shoot the ball was an aspect of the game
Although a wide variety of skills were trained, none showed as much improvement throughout the week as shooting. NCAA campers improved their free throw percentages from an average of 29 percent on day one to 40 percent by the end of the week. The NBA group increased its percentage from 38 percent to 50 percent over the course of five days.
The improved shooting was most noticeable in “Hot Shot,” a contest where players have one minute to shoot from five spots of their choosing, each with differing point values based on difficulty. In the seven years that Coach Keith Lambert has been supervising the summer basketball camp, “Hot Shot” averages have never been higher. Dating back to 2011, nine of the top 11 all-time high scores were set this past week in the NCAA group.
