A total of 21 Madison County high school wrestlers advanced from last weekend’s sectional tournaments onto this week’s district wrestling championships inching one step closer to qualifying for the 2017 state tourney.
All four county wrestling teams will be represented at three separate district tournaments that will take place across Ohio Friday, March 3 and Saturday, March 4. Start time for the events will be 9 a.m. Saturday morning.
Seven wrestlers from London High School and two from Jonathan Alder will wrestle in the Division II district tournament being held at Heath High School. The nine district qualifiers from West Jefferson will travel to Coshocton for the D-III district there, while Madison-Plains will have three wrestlers at the district in Troy.
The top four placers in each weight class at the district meets will all advance to the OHSAA state championship meet which will once again be held at Ohio State University’s Schottenstein Center March 9-11.
The Roughriders of West Jefferson scored 182 points at the sectional tourney held at Cardington-Lincoln and finished as the sectional runner-up to Northmor (206).
The team did have a number of standout performances as nine wrestlers advanced to the district.
Sectional championships were earned by Jake Burns (195), Josh Doherty (160) and Damir Pereira (132). Another pair of West Jeff wrestlers made the championship in their respective weight classes but came up just short of winning crowns. David Staten (113) lost a 6-3 decision to Klay Reeves of Northridge and Mark Woodard (145) was pinned in 2:26 by Conor Becker of Northmor.
In addition to the five wrestlers who reached championship matches, the Roughriders also had 152 pounder Logan Harper place third along with Hunter Braithwaite (220) and Chet Lohr (285) both come in fourth.
The sectional tournament held at Madison-Plains High School was won by North Union (166 points). The host Golden Eagles were eighth with 59 points.
A pair of Madison-Plains High School wrestlers made it to championship matches at their respective weight classes but failed to win the district crown.
James Violet placed second at 120 pounds, losing in a pin to Kalib Patterson of Ridgedale. Cody Redding was in the championship at 220 pounds, but he too came up short of a district title, falling to Dylan Thompson of North Union. The third and final district qualifier was Jacob Lawler at 126 pounds, he placed fourth at the sectional.
The two Madison County Division II teams at the sectional at Licking Valley Saturday had solid showings. London placed third with 122 points and Jonathan Alder was sixth finishing with 83. The sectional title went to Steubenville (273) which scored nearly 100 points more than its closest competitor River Valley (173.5).
London got a sectional title from Colten Winters at 170 pounds. He pinned Morgan’s Travis Johnson in 4:49 in the final. The Red Raiders had a pair of runner-up finishes from Dominic Davis (106) and Cameron Stout (145).
Four other London wrestlers earned district berths thanks to fourth-place finishes, they were Ethan James (113), Josh Colvin (138), Colin Minner (182) and Garrett Welson (195).
The Jonathan Alder district qualifiers were Jacob Johnson (120) who earned a 9-8 decision over Gunner Carpenter of Licking Valley to capture the sectional crown, and Zane Johnson (126) who lost his championship match 7-1 against Licking Valley’s Addison Fogle.
