And then there was one.
All four of the Madison County high school boys golf teams competed in sectional tournaments Tuesday, Sept. 27, but only one lone individual qualified through to next week’s district tournament.
Madison-Plains senior Jonathon Dill fired a round of 81 at Oakhaven Golf Course in Delaware and earned the first Division II district qualifying slot. Dill will compete in the D-II district tournament which will be held at Apple Valley Golf Club Wednesday, Oct. 5. The tournament was originally scheduled to be at the Denison Golf Club in Granville, but course conditions prompted the Central District to move the tournament.
Dill paced a Golden Eagles team which was in search of a one of the three district-qualifying team spots. Columbus Academy won the sectional crown with a 324. Hartley (328) and Lakewood (336) snagged the other two district qualifying spots and Plains just missed the mark by finishing fourth (354).
In addition to Dill’s 81, senior Hunter McConkey turned in an 87, senior Anthony Tesi finished with an 89, while sophomore Clay Grear (97) and Ian Bowshier (103) also competed for the Eagles.
The Players Club at Foxfire in Lockbourne and a strong sectional field proved to be too much for Jonathan Alder and London Tuesday.
The Pioneers fired a 374, but finished fourth and missed qualifying for the district by one place. Bexley won the tournament with a 325 and was followed by Worthington Christian (331) and Northridge (356). London’s team round of 415 placed it ninth out of the 10 teams competing.
Alder’s best score was turned in by freshman Hayden Mitchell (88). Junior Zach Otto came in with a 90, junior Joey Petrella carded a 97, senior Tyler Unger fired a 99 and freshman Mychal McKelvey finished with a 110.
For London it was also a freshman posting the team’s top score. Drew Herman fired a round of 90. Junior Joseph Johnson finished with a 106, freshman Nicholas Berchtold carded a 107, while senior Erik Snyder and sophomore Andy Fulmer had matching rounds of 112.
West Jefferson competed in the D-III sectional at Pine Hill Golf Course Tuesday, however the Roughriders round of 375 placed it fifth, two spots out of the last district qualifying spot.
Newark Catholic (338) easily won the sectional. It was followed by Grandview (353) and Ridgedale (357). Fisher Catholic was fourth (358), one spot ahead of West Jeff.
Sophomore Matt McClish was the team’s low man with a 85. Senior Connor Miller came in with an 89, while sophomore Joe Thompson (100), senior Drew Womble (101) and senior Spencer King (103) all competed on the challenging course in Carroll.
