On Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2017, a contingent from Union County met with the Ohio Parole Board in Columbus to oppose the release of Stanley Penn. Penn is currently incarcerated at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution and is serving a sentence of 20 years to life for the aggravated murder of Union County Sheriff Harry L. Wolfe on Jan. 21, 1982.

Penn shot and killed Sheriff Wolfe at a residence on Robinson Road in southern Union County while Wolfe was investigating a burglary alarm. Penn’s last parole hearing was in February 2008. At that time, parole was denied. His next parole hearing is scheduled for Dec. 11, 2017.

Also attending the meeting was former Union County Prosecutor R. Larry Schneider, retired Columbus Police Detective Chet DeLong, retired Union County Detective Bill Griffith, and a member of the Wolfe family.

Schneider prosecuted Penn and saw him convicted on Aug. 16, 1983 of the charges of aggravated murder, aggravated burglary, and grand theft. DeLong assisted the Sheriff’s Office with the investigation and he and Detective Griffith brought Penn back from New York City after he was caught. Penn is now 68 years old and has been incarcerated for 34 years.

Sheriff Patton urges Union County residents to write to the parole board and oppose Penn’s release. “Words cannot explain the devastation caused by Stanley Penn to the Wolfe family, the Sheriff’s Office and the Union County Community. The loss of Sheriff Wolfe has never been forgotten and it never will be,” said Patton. Members of the Sheriff’s Office, as well as others in law enforcement have been sending letters to the parole board in opposition to Penn’s release. “I wrote a letter to the Ohio Parole Board in October 1983 and told them that Stanley Penn should never be released under any circumstances. I still feel that way today,” said Schneider.
